1917

The Beginning

The Joubert family have owned Skilpadvlei since 1917. The farm name originates from a colony of turtles that roamed the land.

1918

Building the Winery

The Victorian-style farmhouse was built in 1918, when the first vineyards were established too. Over the years, crops have also included wheat, vegetables and tobacco.

Today

The Vineyards

55 hectares are under vine. Cool breezes hit the vineyards in the afternoons and evenings which serves to add flavour to the grapes.

Today

Here for Tomorrow

Today, Willie Joubert runs the estate, Skilpadvlei has a restaurant, wedding venue, gift shop and farm-stay accommodation.

As part of the agricultural industry, we fully depend on our surrounding, just as it depends on us. That’s why we grow our produce organically and sustainably. Over the past decades the carbon footprint of the winery has been positive, which is something we’re really proud of.
